The trouble with bubble bath

2023-04-04T09:20:20+02:00

The trouble with bubble bath.   Vaginitis is a common problem that can affect women and girls of all ages. It can be caused by yeast, bacteria, vaginal contraceptives and sadly the things we as women love most - bubble baths, soaps, feminine sprays, and perfumes.1 Bubble bath, bath salts and bath bombs can contain large amounts of chemicals and dyes to create colour, and a pleasant fragrance. Some products may even contain glitter, which can be difficult to wash away from the vagina, which can lead to further irritation and scratching within and around the vagina. Furthermore, the scratch marks and hair follicles in the affected area can become infected which can cause a secondary infection.2 Bath salts can lead [...]

Some steps you can take to prevent vaginitis

2023-04-04T09:20:22+02:00

Some steps you can take to prevent vaginitis. Wash your vaginal area every day. Use mild soap. Rinse well and pat dry.1 This will help to remove secretions that get stuck in between the skin folds.2 Wipe your vagina and anus from front to back to help prevent the spread of bacteria from the anus to vagina1,3 Don’t douche, this can upset the natural balance of the vagina. When this natural balance between the “good” bacteria and the “bad” bacteria is upset, “bad” bacteria grow too fast and cause infections.1 Take antibiotics only when needed. Antibiotics can kill “good” bacteria. Inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to drug resistance rendering the antibiotic less effective against certain bacteria.1,4,5 Limit the number [...]

Teenagers and Bacterial Vaginosis

2023-04-04T09:20:23+02:00

TEENAGERS AND BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS Bacterial Vaginosis is one of the most common infections affecting young women1. According to Dr Taheera Hassim, a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common vaginal infection affecting young women. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a mild infection in the vagina which develops when there is an imbalance between the helpful "good" bacteria in the vagina and the problematic "bad" bacteria1. Many people incorrectly believe that bacterial vaginosis is a sexually transmitted disease2. Dr Hassim explains that although it is not considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD), the chances of developing bacterial vaginosis seem to increase with the number of sexual partners a woman has.  “You [...]

2023-04-04T09:20:24+02:00

Knowing the difference between Bacterial Vaginosis and Thrush will help keep her phenomenal. You may well wonder why it is important to know the difference between Bacterial Vaginosis and thrush. They both cause vaginal discharge, don’t they? Well, true enough, both infections do cause vaginal discharge, but the organisms responsible for the discharge and the treatment methods differ. Treatment for thrush will not have any effect on bacterial vaginosis and vice versa. 1,2 Thrush is a common vaginal infection, usually caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. The vaginal discharge associated with thrush is white, thick and may look like cottage cheese. 1 Vaginal discharge due to thrush as a rule does not have a funky fishy [...]

She is unwell. How do I talk about it?

2023-04-04T09:20:25+02:00

She is unwell. How do I talk about it? She is your vagina, and she is letting you know that all is not well. You have noticed a thin grey or white vaginal discharge with a decidedly “fishy” odour. 1 So, how do you talk about it? For some reason, women feel embarrassed and sometimes ashamed to discuss conditions affecting their vaginas.2 Speaking to your healthcare professional First of all, your discreet problem needs professional attention. A thin grey or white vaginal discharge with a fishy odour may be bacterial vaginosis, an infection in the vagina that is caused when “bad” bacteria replaces the protective “good” Lactobacilli, which helps keep your vaginal lining acidic and healthy. 1,3. It’s time to celebrate vaginal health

2023-04-04T09:20:27+02:00

THIS WOMEN’S MONTH, IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE VAGINAL HEALTH …and to perhaps think twice before using perfumed soaps or bubble bath1 Your vagina contains large amounts of beneficial bacteria and is naturally acidic1, with a typical pH level of between 3.8 and 4.52. This naturally acidic environment is protective, creating a barrier against unhealthy bacteria and preventing yeast from multiplying too quickly and causing an infection2. A vagina with a pH of over 4.5 puts a woman at risk of developing an infection, as it creates an environment that can enable unhealthy bacteria to grow2. One such condition is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) 2, which effects 1 in 3 women3. This Women’s Month, empower yourself and learn more about what vaginal health [...]

May I introduce you to someone phenomenal?

2023-04-04T09:20:29+02:00

May I introduce you to someone phenomenal?  “Who is she?”, you may ask. Well, she is your vagina, and she is phenomenal! But before I can tell you why that is, I have to let you get to know her a little. Your vagina is an elastic, muscular tube which connects your external genitalia (the vulva) to your womb (the uterus). 1 The vagina is lined with a mucous membrane, kept moist by fluids produced by cells on its surface and by secretions from glands in the cervix (the lower part of the uterus). A small amount of these fluids may pass to the outside as a clear or milky white vaginal discharge, which is normal. 1 Just like any [...]
